Get ready to binge on GLOW, Netflix’s newest series that tackles female empowerment.
In amongst a sea of Gossip Girl’s and Real Housewives, GLOW is a welcome change to the usual line up. Taking inspiration from the one and only Jackie Stallone’s (Yeah, Jackie) women’s only gym Barbella, the series dives into 1980’s Los Angeles.
The series also draws influence from a professional wrestling series which ran from 1986 – 1996… And we can definitely see the inspiration!
Co-created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, GLOW stars Alison Brie as an aspiring and out-of-work actor struggling to make ends meet, before she stumbles upon the world of female professional wrestling.
Whilst we weren’t totally convinced by Girlboss, we eagerly await the documentation of the real life struggle that women can go through, (not that stumbling across an idea at exactly the right time in history isn’t interesting but it also seemed to create a character that is rather un relatable).
The GLOW crew or Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling are made up by Brie, Betty and the opportunistic former director Sam – who has a rather complex history when it comes to women.
We envision a dodgeball-esque motley crew, should be extremely fun!
Catch GLOW this summer, the 10 episodes series premieres on June 23rd, and watch the official trailer below.
